⏱️ In a Nutshell (for those with no time)
Arsène Lupin never broke locks. He broke trust, through disguise, charm and patience, while Inspector Ganimard chased him with persistence and pattern-spotting. Today, AI plays both roles. Thieves use it to clone voices and craft convincing phishing, and defenders use it to detect patterns at scale. As in Leblanc’s stories, each side wins some battles and loses others, and neither wins for good. The race is continuous, so humility, specialist expertise, governed AI adoption and well-trained people matter more than any single tooParis, early 1900s. A gentleman in a perfectly tailored coat walks into a château. He says nothing false and breaks no lock. He simply looks like someone who belongs there.
That was Arsène Lupin, the gentleman burglar created by Maurice Leblanc. His great opponent was Inspector Ganimard, who chased him through story after story with mixed results. I have been rereading their duel lately. Every page now reads like a briefing on the age of AI.
🎭 The Thief’s Playbook: Break Trust, Not Locks
Lupin’s genius was never force. It was impersonation, patience and charm. AI has handed that playbook to everyone.
One documented case: attackers used AI-cloned audio of a German parent-company executive to trick a UK subsidiary head into transferring about €220,000. That is Lupin’s disguise, performed by an algorithm. A Pulse report on a Wells Fargo warning adds that AI-crafted phishing emails get more than four times the click-through of human-written ones. The modern thief no longer needs a costume, only a convincing voice.
🔍 The Inspector’s Playbook: Patterns and Persistence
Ganimard was dogged. He built files, noticed habits and never stopped. Today’s inspector is a machine learning model that reads millions of signals a second and spots what no human desk could.
Banks have understood this. About 90% of financial institutions are trying to prevent fraud with AI-powered solutions. Yet nearly nine in ten cite data management as their biggest hurdle. Ganimard had the same problem: the clues were scattered.
⚖️ The Scoreboard: Lupin Wins Some, Loses Some
Leblanc was fair to both sides. The first collection includes “The Arrest of Arsène Lupin” and “The Escape of Arsène Lupin”. The inspector wins one chapter and the thief wins the next.
Today’s scoreboard looks the same. An IT Brew report says attackers have so far enjoyed more success, partly because they face none of the regulatory limits defenders must respect. A recent Intelligence Squared debate told a more hopeful story. 84% of attendees believed attackers hold the advantage, but the speakers argued the race will also be won through governance, employee awareness and better data habits.
♾️ The War Never Stops on One Battle
Leblanc never let either side win for good. He wrote twenty-one Lupin novels or collections, because a final victory would have ended the story.
Researchers describe cybersecurity the same way. Attackers need to succeed only once, while defenders must succeed continuously, so the conflict becomes a continuous race rather than a terminal victory. The AI cop and the AI thief will keep teaching each other. Every defensive model trains the next attack, and every attack trains the next defense.
🧭 A Responsible Way Forward
Lupin’s stories carry a quiet lesson. The thief’s greatest advantage was never his tools. It was that everyone around him was sure they were safe.
So I will not offer a recipe here. Security is a specialist discipline, and no article should pretend to replace the professionals who practice it. What I can offer are principles any leader can reflect on:
- Stay humble. The race has no finish line, so no organization is ever “done”.
- Bring in specialists. Protecting an organization belongs with qualified security professionals who know its context.
- Adopt AI with governance. Clear policies, respect for regulations, careful handling of data and human oversight should come before enthusiasm.
- Invest in people. Awareness and a culture where it is normal to ask “is this real?” matter as much as any tool.
Leblanc never let either side win for good, because the story would have ended. AI is writing the same kind of story, and the best preparation is thoughtful, responsible adoption.
At Xperts⁴, our expertise is the AI environment. We help organizations adopt AI in a professional, structured way that respects the rules, through practical use cases, training and hands-on adoption programs. If you are asking how to bring AI into your organization responsibly, let’s talk.
